Working with Securus Technologies in Fighting Dangerous Crimes

There is an upsurge in violent crimes in our city, and whenever this happens, my fugitive task force is called in to take suspects into custody before they can commit any other crimes. We had a very troubling situation on our hands this month because the two suspects we were hunting were part of a gang that had a violent history with police. If we were going to locate these suspects, we were going to need to do so quickly before they could tunnel out of sight.

These two fugitives were not only carjacking innocent people, they would do whatever necessary to feed a very costly drug addiction. If they needed cash, a vehicle, shelter, or drugs, they would use their weapons on the unfortunate residents who wound up being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It is near impossible to get help from informants when gangs are involved, so we took our team to the local jail to rattle some cages.

With a huge population of gang members in jail, we knew that all we needed to do was make our presence known, and someone would start talking. Securus Technologies was responsible for putting the inmate call system in the jail, and it was going to be listening to the inmates on the phones when they ran to call their family or fellow gang-bangers after our visit.

Like clockwork, the lower-level gang members were on the phone to their friends, trying to warn them we were hunting them all down. Each time we heard chatter on our suspects, we began to paint a picture as to where they could be hiding. It didn’t take long for us to be able to set up a surveillance team at a safe house and take them down without incident in the middle of the night.

Success Academy – The Shining Light in Public Education

Success Academy, New York City’s largest and most successful charter school network,

recently launched an online ‘education institute’ to share curriculum and professional development among education professionals, including teachers and school administrators.

The platform, called the ‘Success Academy Education Institute,’ will expand Success Academy’s influence beyond New York City, where the network currently operates 41 schools across the four boroughs and serves a remarkable 14,000 students.

Success Academy’s approach is different from most charter schools, which are publically funded but privately owned. In a Success Academy elementary school classroom, for instance, only 80 minutes are spent on direct instruction. During the rest of the day, students are encouraged to learn, grow, and develop through hands-on learning and small group instruction. In Success Academy high schools, students enjoy a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes broad-based thinking and preparation for the demands of college.

The Institute will serve as a free portal for teachers, administrators, and other education professionals to access the content that has made Success Academy so, well, successful. Success Academy charter schools rank among the top 1% in New York State for math, the top 2% for English, and in the top 5% for science. Among Success Academy students who have disabilities, 79% passed math and 52% passed English in 2016.

Through the Institute, leaders in other schools will be able to access curriculum, tools, and resources, and apply the Success Academy model to their own schools. This expands on the vision of Success Academy founder and CEO Eve Moskowitz to transform education beyond opening high-achieving charter schools. Moskowitz sees the Institute as a “vehicle” for sharing Success Academy’s resources with educators across the country and around the world.

Success Academy also continues to achieve legislative success. In early June, a state appeals court ruled in a long-standing legal battle that New York City cannot regulate the prekindergarten curriculum of the city’s charter school.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Fight for Migrant Rights in Arizona

With so many migration issues in Europe and many countries in the Americas, it is important to identify organizations that support and advocate for civil, human and migrant rights.

Migrants Rights International (MRI) is an NGO that promotes and defends human rights of migrants in different global regions. As a non-governmental organization, MRI maintains special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In a globalized world, migration and human rights have come into the spotlight in the midst of economic and political confrontations that are changing the world as we know it. The increase of violence in many regions of the world is an issue that many societies have been forced to face while some governments have attenuated and even denied human rights to millions of migrant families and individuals.

According to the UN, it is estimated that there are over 200 million people that currently live outside of the country they were born in. This figure equates to approximately 1 in 35 people being and international migrant. This number is only the official number, not counting for those that are in the condition of infringement of immigration laws.

It is very frequent that migrants suffer violence and are unable to receive legal protection where they are due to their illegal immigration status or even due to their nationality being prosecuted. The simple status of being “illegal” violates the international human rights law. Over recorded history, very few countries have fought to uphold dignity and human rights of those in these situations. Learn more about Jim Larkin:

In light of this sad reality, in 1994, international church representatives, human rights representatives, and other organizations united to form the “International Migrants Rights Watch Committee,” which in 2000, was renamed and is currently called Migrants Rights International (MRI).

MRI is based in Switzerland and unites multiple international, country and regional groups originating from the Americas, Europe, African and Asia to defend migrants’ rights and make the migrant voice heard so that coherent policies can be developed and accepted.

Another important effort is the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund, established by Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, who are also co-founders of the Phoenix New Times and Village Voice Media. In an episode involving Sheriff Joe Arpaio that resulted in settlement money, Lacey and Larkin decided to use the same money to help migrant organizations in the state of Arizona.

In the middle of the night while at their homes, reporters Lacey and Larkin found themselves being arrested and jailed, by the sheriff of Maricopa, Joe Arpaio.

The reason this happened was that they had revealed that grand jury proceedings had requested the reporters’ notes on articles about Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Their arrest took place on October, 18th, 2007 and later on resulted in a U$3.75 million settlement.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund supports groups that defend civil, human and migrant rights as well as civic participation and the freedom of speech at the Mexican border in Arizona and throughout the state.

Eric Lefkofsky Has It In For Cancer

Eric Lefkofsky hopes to put his skills for starting new things to work in order to put an end to something: cancer. When the forty-seven year old entrepreneur found out that his wife had cancer, he found the treatment process confusing. He didn’t know what to do or where to go in order to find information.

And so an idea was born. Lefkofsky used his personal experience as motivation. Together with his business partner Brad Keywell, Lefkofsky founded Tempus. It’s an innovative company that uses artificial intelligence and genome sequencing to study a cancer patient’s tumor and then recommend effective treatment plans.

With previous analytics experience, the pair hopes to take their skills in a new direction that helps cancer patients. Lefkofsky hopes that the idea can spread to all types of health care services. With doctors making so many important decisions each day, they should have access to analytic tools to aid them, Eric Lefkofsky says. He credits the fact that he’s able to self fund his venture in order to give him the speed and freedom he needs to work effectively.

Erick Lefkofsky is no stranger to a new challenge. He’s one of the original founders of Groupon. He also founded Lightbank, a venture capital firm that focuses on inventive technologies. Apart from his analytics work with Tempus, Lefkofsky founded Uptake Technologies. It’s a company that helps the largest industries around the world with business analytic aids. His other startups include Mediaocean, Echo Global Logistics and InnerWorkings.

Despite his love of innovation and his work providing business solutions, Lefkofsky also works to provide social solutions. He started the Lefkofsky Family Foundation in 2006. This is Lefkofsky’s personal, private charity. He works with his wife to use the foundation to pursue charitable initiatives that have a big impact in the communities where they occur. In addition, he’s a trustee of Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry and the Art Institute of Chicago. He teaches part-time at the University of Chicago. Lefkofsky holds both a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Michigan.
