Lacey and Larkin — Human Rights Crusaders

In Arizona, an environment of fear, intolerance, and hate has been brewing. Those who are perceived as immigrants – legal and illegal – are met with racism and cultural isolation. Their families are often shunned from society.

These immigrants have come to America seeking a new way of life, they have come searching for asylum from their war-torn countries; they have come in hopes of achieving the American Dream.

Violence from coyotes, human trafficking, forced prostitution, and drug mules have left a sour taste in the mouths of the Trump Administration and border patrol. That sour taste has spread like a virus into rural America.

When immigrants cross the border into America, they do so at great peril. It is a very risky trip. The desert nights can drop below zero and during the day temperatures flare. Scorpions, rattlesnakes, coyotes, and vultures loom around every corner. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: https://michael-lacey.com/ and http://www.laceyandlarkinfronterafund.org/about-lacey-larkin-frontera-fund/michael-lacey/

If you fail to pack enough food and water then you’ll die a slow death of starvation and dehydration. The most difficult struggle of many immigrants crossing the border into America is the test of surviving. And it is a tough test indeed.

For those who make it across, they feel overwhelming emotions of elation. They are met with a newfound sense of hope. They have a chance to offer their families a better life.

Activists and advocates of migrant rights have been fighting an uphill battle in the White House. Critical issues like United States and Mexico border relations, the DREAM Act, detention centers, and political asylum seekers are met with a cold shoulder.

The DREAM Act was meant to protect the rights of children who came to America as immigrants.

Recently, in Arizona, two journalists were awarded a large settlement. They received $3.75 million for their unlawful arrest in Maricopa County. They were reporting on a prominent case concerning the local sheriff Joe Arpaio. The sheriff and grand jury subpoenaed the reporters’ notes and when they refused, he came to their homes in the middle of the night and arrested them both. He held them in a prison cell until they were released.

Even worse, a grand jury was brought up on charges for ordering the surveillance of citizens who had read articles online concerning the sheriff. These were both blatant infringements of the reporters’ and citizens’ First Amendment rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

Since their settlement was reached, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have dedicated the money to defending the rights of journalists and immigrants.

The Lacey and Larkin Foundation is dedicated to improving living conditions of immigrants and minorities in the United States. They work to ensure human rights are met and everyone has a fair chance at living a life of freedom and prosperity.

Talos Energy Wins Auction to Set Up Rigs in Mexico

Mexico has always been known for being a country that has some of the best-untapped oil potentials. In the past, most of the oil rigs that were being used were being operated by people running state organizations. Most of these companies would make use of government funds to run their work and carry out their operations. This, however, did not work out as well as the country would have expected in the past. The amount of oil that the country could extract was severely limited, and the country was not on the top of the oil scene in spite of a lot of resources that they possess. To make the oil scene better for the country, and to make the maximum utilization of all the resources that Mexico has, the government decided to open up the oil and petroleum sector for the first time in over eighty years. The new regulations that the government has installed will allow private organizations and enterprises to establish their rigs in the oil beds, thus allowing for a more efficient use of the resources that the country has. This will also be a brilliant step for the trade of the country since they can now increase the amount of oil that Mexico chooses to export. This move will also cement the country’s position in the oil industry. To know about Talos Energy click here.

When it comes to the businesses that want to set up here, the country has now made way for international names. International companies are now being permitted to set up in the country. Recently, the Mexican government conducted an auction to give out the first position in the country. Talos Energy was the company to win the auction. The win allows the company to be one of the first to set up their oil rigs in the country. They also have access to a larger pool of rigs to choose from. Talos Energy has been operating in the industry of oil and petroleum for a long. To carry out this endeavor, the company partnered with Premier Oil, which is a company based in London, as well as Sierra Oil and Gas, which is a company native to Mexico.

Jim Larkin: The legendary Activist Who crippled British Labour Policy and Revolutionised Trade Unionism

Jim Larkin, commonly known as Big Jim, was a famous trade unionist. He was conceived by Irish parents in January 1876 in the slum area of Liverpool, England. Jim was not well educated. Thus he did manual jobs to provide for himself. Jim was hired as the foreman at the Liverpool docks. He became a socialist and was devoted to ensuring the workers get fair job conditions.

Jim joined NUDL (National Union of Dock Labourers) and ultimately became a permanent trade union organizer in 1905. The organization were not pleased with his strike action techniques hence they transferred him to Dublin in 1907.

While in Dublin, Jim launched the ITGWU (Irish Transport and General Workers Union). Larkin wanted all Irish industrial workers, both skilled and unskilled to belong to one union that would champion for their welfare.

Jim Larkin released the political programme outline of the ITGWU in December 1908. It included the provision of work for the unemployed people, legal eight working hours a day, provision of pension for all employees above 60 years, adult suffrage, compulsory arbitration courts, as well as the nationalisation of railways, canals, and other means of transport. Jim wanted Ireland to serve the Irish people.

In 1912, Jim Larkin partnered with James Connolly, and they founded the Irish Labour Party, which led a series of strikes including the prominent 1913 Dublin Lockout. Jim knew that unskilled workers in Dublin had very few rights and was championing for their right to fair employment.

Over 100,000 workers boycott work for more than seven months and eventually they won. Constance Markievicz was inspired by Larkin’s speech during the industrial strike in 1913. Markievicz was amazed by the great power that emanated from Larkin’s speech. He had never met a man like Jim before.

Larkin’s methods were not violent; rather, they were sympathetic strikes that involved boycotting of goods. It was impractical for him to establish a mass trade union by demolishing the companies where his members worked. Despite the opposition faced from the Irish Press, Larkin and his union had numerous supporters including Constance Markievicz, Patrick Pearse, and William B. Yeats.

William’s poem that was released in September 1913 is perceived by many as a commentary on the Dublin Lockout.

Larkin led an anti-war demonstration in Dublin after the breakout of the First World War and urged the Irish people not to be involved in the war. He advised his people to fight for Ireland and not any other land.

In 1914, Jim departed for the United States of America, with the aim of raising funds to fight the British. While there, he joined Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Socialist Party of America. The Easter Rising of 1916 took place in Ireland while Jim was in America.

His close friend James Connolly passed away in the Easter Rising. In 1918, Jim established James Connolly Socialist Club in New York, in honour of his friend.

Jim was deported back to Ireland in 1920. He continued to champion for the rights of workers until his demise in 1947.

Success Academy – The Shining Light in Public Education

Success Academy, New York City’s largest and most successful charter school network,

recently launched an online ‘education institute’ to share curriculum and professional development among education professionals, including teachers and school administrators.

The platform, called the ‘Success Academy Education Institute,’ will expand Success Academy’s influence beyond New York City, where the network currently operates 41 schools across the four boroughs and serves a remarkable 14,000 students.

Success Academy’s approach is different from most charter schools, which are publically funded but privately owned. In a Success Academy elementary school classroom, for instance, only 80 minutes are spent on direct instruction. During the rest of the day, students are encouraged to learn, grow, and develop through hands-on learning and small group instruction. In Success Academy high schools, students enjoy a rigorous curriculum that emphasizes broad-based thinking and preparation for the demands of college.

The Institute will serve as a free portal for teachers, administrators, and other education professionals to access the content that has made Success Academy so, well, successful. Success Academy charter schools rank among the top 1% in New York State for math, the top 2% for English, and in the top 5% for science. Among Success Academy students who have disabilities, 79% passed math and 52% passed English in 2016.

Through the Institute, leaders in other schools will be able to access curriculum, tools, and resources, and apply the Success Academy model to their own schools. This expands on the vision of Success Academy founder and CEO Eve Moskowitz to transform education beyond opening high-achieving charter schools. Moskowitz sees the Institute as a “vehicle” for sharing Success Academy’s resources with educators across the country and around the world.

Success Academy also continues to achieve legislative success. In early June, a state appeals court ruled in a long-standing legal battle that New York City cannot regulate the prekindergarten curriculum of the city’s charter school.
