Lacey and Larkin — Human Rights Crusaders

In Arizona, an environment of fear, intolerance, and hate has been brewing. Those who are perceived as immigrants – legal and illegal – are met with racism and cultural isolation. Their families are often shunned from society.

These immigrants have come to America seeking a new way of life, they have come searching for asylum from their war-torn countries; they have come in hopes of achieving the American Dream.

Violence from coyotes, human trafficking, forced prostitution, and drug mules have left a sour taste in the mouths of the Trump Administration and border patrol. That sour taste has spread like a virus into rural America.

When immigrants cross the border into America, they do so at great peril. It is a very risky trip. The desert nights can drop below zero and during the day temperatures flare. Scorpions, rattlesnakes, coyotes, and vultures loom around every corner. If you fail to pack enough food and water then you’ll die a slow death of starvation and dehydration. The most difficult struggle of many immigrants crossing the border into America is the test of surviving. And it is a tough test indeed.

For those who make it across, they feel overwhelming emotions of elation. They are met with a newfound sense of hope. They have a chance to offer their families a better life.

Activists and advocates of migrant rights have been fighting an uphill battle in the White House. Critical issues like United States and Mexico border relations, the DREAM Act, detention centers, and political asylum seekers are met with a cold shoulder.

The DREAM Act was meant to protect the rights of children who came to America as immigrants.

Recently, in Arizona, two journalists were awarded a large settlement. They received $3.75 million for their unlawful arrest in Maricopa County. They were reporting on a prominent case concerning the local sheriff Joe Arpaio. The sheriff and grand jury subpoenaed the reporters’ notes and when they refused, he came to their homes in the middle of the night and arrested them both. He held them in a prison cell until they were released.

Even worse, a grand jury was brought up on charges for ordering the surveillance of citizens who had read articles online concerning the sheriff. These were both blatant infringements of the reporters’ and citizens’ First Amendment rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution.

Since their settlement was reached, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have dedicated the money to defending the rights of journalists and immigrants.

The Lacey and Larkin Foundation is dedicated to improving living conditions of immigrants and minorities in the United States. They work to ensure human rights are met and everyone has a fair chance at living a life of freedom and prosperity.
